Mission

  • Solar United Neighbors is a community of people building a new energy system with rooftop solar at the cornerstone. We help people go solar, join together, and fight for their energy rights.

Why Energy Democracy?

A democratic energy system is one that directs benefits and control back to local communities. We envision rooftop solar as the cornerstone of this new democratic energy system. Critical to its success will be making sure that everyone has access to solar electricity and can benefit from its many values. Electric bill savings, job creation, community health and development—these are the reasons we’re fighting for energy democracy.

Key Strategy

  • It is not enough that the solar market be big: it must be fair and its benefits must be widely distributed.
  • Educating and empowering local community members to fight for a voice in their energy future not only helps to create a better system for everyone, it creates a diverse new leadership that will continue to fight for energy democracy well into the future. Moreover, a truly distributed, democratic, and equitable clean energy movement will be unstoppable.
  • Building coalitions to power movements requires trust and accountability built through the hard work of relationship building—and impacted communities must included in the conversation as partners.

Accomplishments

  • We’ve built a base of more than 60,000 solar supporters helping to build the democratic, equitable energy system we all deserve.
  • As of June 2018, we’ve helped nearly 3,000 homes and businesses go solar and install more than 21,200 kW of new solar. That activity has helped create nearly 650 jobs—and counting!
  • Our base of solar supporters has helped secure concrete victories for solar energy and energy democracy in ten states—including the groundbreaking Solar for All program in Washington, DC, which sets an ambitious goal to cut the electric bills by 50% for 100,000 low- and moderate-income residents through rooftop solar by 2032.
